My grandmother was sitting on a chair reading a book and facing the window. I ran up to her and hug her from behind she look up and hold my hand as she slowly pull me forward.
I was a tiny nine year old so she picked me up and placed me on her laps. She gave me a soft smile as if she was remembering something while looking at me.
"So what brings you here little princess" My grandmother said with a soft smile. She was a beautiful woman and she still is, no one can say that she is old.
"I want to be with you" I said proudly.
"Well you want to hear a story I just remember" She said putting my hands in hers.
I shake my head in a way to say yes but I didn’t bother reminding her that it was my birthday, I never bother reminding anyone and no one bother to wish me either.
"Well you are eight and after ten years you will be an adult. You will meet a boy who you would want to spend your life with but you might be a different lady that time. I want to tell you a story that will always stay with you and it might teach you what love really is" She said looking out the window, her eyes were still as if she was remembering something.
"You know love is like a disease, a disease that can never be cure, no matter how many medicines you eat, it always stays with you. Many people fall in love but only few are lucky to get their love and once they get their true love they never want to let go and I don’t blame them for it." She said making an eye contact with me and giving me a smile.
"There was a girl who was about fourteen years old, she was beautiful and yes every young boy was crazy about her but there was this one special boy that she was crazy about. In school she would always sneak peeks at him, they would pass note to each other and they would always laugh as if they haven’t laugh in years." My grandmother said closing her eyes and continuing.
"One day the young boy got courage and asked this girl out. Oh how happy she was, she didn’t take any time and she said yes to him in that moment. Being with this young man was magical it was like a dream come true. They share everything and soon the time past. They were known as high school sweethearts and why they shouldn’t, they were the only couple who stayed together for three years of high school. Of course they had fights and arguments but they always ended up together, they were in love of course. When they turn eighteen they went to college but they never stop seeing or loving each other.
They spend time together like any couple would but like always every love story have an enemy and the enemy was her parents. She was from a rich family and one sunny day her parents said that there is someone who wants to marry her. She didn’t listen to what her parents had to say. She storm out the door but where could she go? She call her lover and told him about this he told her to go back home and he will come for her. She went home and waited for him to come, 1 day pass…2…3…she call him, she knock on his door but everything was as silent as her life.
On the fourth day her parent’s pressure became more and more and she finally decided to take a step. She thought if she can’t have her lover than she doesn’t want anyone and the only way she saw was ending her hurtful life. She found a medicine that will give her peace and soon everything was black. As her eyes close she saw her lover face, she saw the time they spend together. She doesn’t know what happen after but when she open her eyes her lover was standing in front of her, he was looking at her with his beautiful eyes.
He ran up to her as if he have just seen an angel, his eyes lighten and his face turn into a smile. He holds her hand lightly but he doesn’t say anything, he just looks at her for the longest time possible. She could feel the end, she knew if she let go he will never come back again. Even though they weren’t saying a word she knew that he was telling her that everything is going to be okay, that she should do what is best for her parents.
Without saying anything he said it all, without opening his mouth he said so much. He starts removing his hands from hers but she holds it tight but her grip is lost and his hands are release. Her lover starts stepping out the room but he looks at her one last time, she has tears in her eyes and so does he.
She listens to her parents and gets marry to this rich young man who she has known from before but was not interested in. She burry’s her heart and she hides her love. She does what a woman should do, she tries to give all the happiness to her husband, and she has not one but many children’s with him.
Years pass and she would always sit near the window wondering what her high school sweetheart was doing, wondering if he has forgotten her and wondering if he was happy with his life. She would always sit and wonder what it would have been like if they were married, sure he wasn’t rich but he was a good hearted person and that all it matter for her but now it didn’t make any different, everything was over and it was only her body that was alive not her soul.
As time pass she learns to keep herself busy with alcohol and drugs. Her children grew up in boarding school and her husband was busy, too busy to care what she was up to. They would have many fights but they were fights that were not meant to be.
One day she was being her usual self when she bumps into someone, she looks up and realizes that it was her lover; he was still as handsome as she last saw him. He was as surprise as her when he saw her and he invited her to drink coffee, first she refuse knowing that she was in no condition to be seen by high school sweetheart. She was an alcoholic and drug abuser and that was an enough reason to not have another word of talk with her lover but he insisted and she said yes.
The conversation was back and forth, she found out that he didn’t marry anyone and now he was a millionaire. When he said that he was a millionaire she wanted to run to her parents and tell them that he wasn’t a worthless person and that they were wrong to think this about him but then she realize that it didn’t matter anymore. He asked her how her life is and with a little smile she said "Is fine" but in her heart she was crying.
Days passed and she didn’t hear from him but than her phone rang and she pick up without knowing that it was her lover. He sound upset and he wanted to see her. When they met he told her that the reason he didn’t marry anyone was because he was in love with her too much. He couldn’t forget her so he kept himself busy with work, he also said that he had a heart condition that couldn’t be cure and he wanted to spend his last moments with her.
They talk and talk and their memories of old times started to refresh, she didn’t realize that she was cheating on her husband till one rainy day. She was sorry for what she did but in her heart she knew that what she did was right, it felt right, her husband wasn’t the most truthful person so why should she be, she knew that he have cheated on her many times.
They kept seeing each other and she decided she want a divorce, her husband was not angry but delighted to get out of the relationship his exact words were "I am glad that this is over before it got any worse". She married her high school sweetheart and they live a happy life for a year but soon her lover started to get sicker and in matter of minutes he was lying on the hospital bed. He holds her hand and again there were no words exchange just a look in each other eyes as if they were talking without saying anything. He closes his eyes slowly and she knew that this time he has left her forever."
When my grandmother was done she had tears in her eyes, I look at her sad and upset for the woman who went through all this but I was a curious little child so I asked "What happen to the woman after he died?"
My grandmother look at me with a soft smile "You are looking at her"
I look at my grandmother surprise and sorry for what she has gone through but than she did something, she wipes her tears and give me her biggest smile.
"He’s at a better place now and I told you this so you don’t make a same mistake as me, you should always fight to keep your love"
